Through Adversity, Choose Growth

Sharing is caring!

At some point in everyone’s life, we look around and everything seems to be changing around us. In certain extraordinary times, it seems like things have changed. When shocked by a recent event, It’ s almost like you are seeing the world through different eyes.

I remember experiencing this on September 11, 2001 when my work sent us home. I was at the grocery store that evening and remember stumbling around like I was an extra on a bad Horror movie. I looked around and everything seemed different than it was before. I was much younger then and didn’t realize that the world had actually changed and that everyone was experiencing the same thing.

In 2001, younger me went home wanted to rage at the world for what was happening. I was angry, scared, and confused. I wanted to do something; anything to make a difference and to make things better. I talked to family and friends to make sure everyone was OK, but for all of that desire, all that drive, the only thing that I ended up doing was to sit at home watching TV and playing video games. I went back to work a week later, still in a haze and slightly fatter and likely slightly dumber than when I left.

Looking back, I now realize that I could have done something with that time. I could have done something to improve myself or to strengthen my ties with my family and friends.

I don’t know about you, but it sure seems like 2020 has brought a lot of change and uncertainty so far. Everywhere you turn, there is another major event in the world crying out for your attention and your concern. Everywhere, there is a reason for you to fear something if you allow yourself to go down that path.

I challenge you to do something different in these turbulent times. When others are running downhill in a panic, run uphill. Run towards personal growth, and personal development. Run towards becoming a better version of you. Check in and support your loved ones. Grow your personal relationship with your family and friends. Do something that you’ve been putting off for a long time. Do many things that you’ve been putting off for a long time.

Remember, we’ll get through this. We always do, and I for one plan to be stronger when I get to the other side. Why don’t you join me?
